WHAT IS GREEK LIFE?

Texas A&M University-San Antonio believes that fraternities and sororities are a fundamental part of a vibrant campus community, creating space for lifelong friendships, opportunities for service, leadership development, and academic success. Fraternities and sororities (Greek Orgs) develop a sense of acceptance and belonging. The connections fostered by fraternities and sororities last beyond the undergraduate experience, inspiring students to reach their full potential. To support the missions of the University, Cisneros Institute, and Student Life, the Fraternity Sorority Life (FSL) Office seeks to maintain positive relationships with the campus community through intentional programming and collaborations.

• Friendship: For many individuals, lifelong friendships are the most important component of Greek life. The fact that members call themselves "sister" and "brother" demonstrates the sense of family the groups provide. Many groups have active alums/graduate chapters providing opportunities for continued involvement.
• Community: Many of your fondest college memories will be developed through social interaction. Greek organizations provide the chance to make new friends and have fun. In this often-overwhelming university environment, Greek women and men find that a sorority or fraternity offers a place to be comfortable and at home. 
• Leadership: Membership in Greek organizations offers students many opportunities to develop their leadership potential. Members learn essential leadership skills for post-college life; they will experience what it means to be a leader and how to cooperate and collaborate with others.
• Scholarship: Members have access to additional tools needed to succeed academically. Each Greek organization offers academic support programs, including national and local scholarships and grants, incentives and awards, study skills workshops, tutoring programs, established study sessions, and grade point requirements.
• Networking: Greek organizations maintain active alum relations programs that offer career networking and mentoring possibilities. These organizations connect you specifically to a robust roster of past alums, providing mentoring and shadowing opportunities within your field.
• Service: Participation in community service builds character through the realization of the needs of others. Greek organizations, individually and collectively, are involved in activities such as tutoring children, organizing fundraising events and competitions, conducting community and various other philanthropic activities. This gives members a greater sense of purpose in their lives.
