Black History Month

Celebratory Month: February
February is Black History Month, an annual observance that pays tribute to the struggles and accomplishments of African Americans. The tradition originated in 1926 when historian and author Dr. Carter G. Woodson launched Negro History Week. During the 1960s and '70s, civil rights advocates pushed to expand the observance, and in 1986, Congress passed legislation that designated February as National Black History Month.
Texas A&M University-San Antonio invites the community to join in the celebration of Black History Month and embrace the opportunity to learn from one another. By honoring the richness of African American history, the University reaffirms its commitment to cultivating an inclusive environment where every individual's story is acknowledged and celebrated.
