Welcome to the English Program!
The English Program at Texas A&M University-San Antonio engages students’ intellectual imagination. We offer two undergraduate degrees in English—a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Bachelor of Arts in English with Secondary Teaching Certification—and a Master of Arts in English. In addition, undergraduate students can minor in English. Our classes cover all periods and major genres of American and British literature, plus courses in rhetoric and composition, multiethnic literature, visual studies, women’s literature and gender studies, and more.
Students in English learn how to think critically, reason carefully, communicate effectively, and appreciate excellent writing and literary expression. Our small classes mean a low student-to-teacher ratio; consequently, students will study with professors passionate about teaching and actively engaged in academic research. The English Program supports frequent on-campus academic and cultural events including readings by visiting writers. Such events are typically planned in collaboration with the program’s sponsored student organization, The Literature Club.
Students who graduate from the English program are prepared for graduate and professional schools, as well as careers in teaching, technical and professional writing, editing and publishing, information services and technology, government, and non-profit agencies, among other fields.
English Program Mission Statement
The English Program at Texas A&M University-San Antonio builds intellectual community around the analysis and production of texts across a variety of genres, media, and cultures. Participation in the program empowers students to engage critically in dynamic conversations within the fields of rhetorical, literary, and cultural studies. Students apply their knowledge in public and professional contexts and to effect positive social change in South Texas and beyond.
