Mission Statement
Our mission is to serve a culturally diverse Texas A&M – San Antonio student population by providing quality mental health services, fostering a sense of belonging, collaborating with campus and community partners, and promoting holistic wellness to improve student success.

Vision Statement
We strive to promote student success by decreasing mental health stigma and providing services to support better health and well-being in the lives of our students.

About Us
The Student Counseling Center staff consists of licensed mental health clinicians, a Clinical Case Manager, an Administrative Coordinator/Office Manager, Graduate Trainees, and student employees. Our clinical staff represents a variety of mental health disciplines, including Licensed Psychologists, Licensed Professional Counselors, Licensed Social Workers, and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors. Our staff also includes Graduate Trainees who are in the process of obtaining their degrees in counseling and psychology.

Meet our Staff

Joanna Vela, LPC-S, LCDC, NCC
Director of Student Counseling Center
  • Preferred Pronouns: She/ Her/ Hers
  • Theoretical Orientation/Treatment Approach: I utilize Cognitive Behavioral and Person-Centered therapy approaches as the core of my work with students. I believe the most powerful force in the treatment process creates a safe space for clients to feel seen and heard. I also highlight the power of changing one's thoughts to influence how one feels, as well as the importance of processing the emotions of life experiences. Lastly, I prioritize focusing on the parts of life within one's control rather than those that are not and letting personal values guide one's life choices.
  • Areas of Interest: Substance Use Disorders, Trauma Recovery, Depression and Anxiety, Identity Development, and Spirituality.
  • Fun Facts: I have been scuba diving with sharks. I like to knit and crochet. I enjoy Aggie Football, the Texas Rangers, and Los Spurs.

Jerimar Abinsay, LPC-S 
Counselor

  • Theoretical Orientation/Treatment Approach: My theoretical orientation was developed by integrating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Solution-Focused Therapy and Trauma-Informed Care. I utilize strength-based and mindfulness techniques to help my clients personalize their treatment as they fulfill their needs.
  • Areas of Interest: Depression and Anxiety, Trauma-Informed Care, Development and Spirituality, LGBTQIA+ Issues, Grief and Loss.
  • Fun Facts: I love playing Dungeons and Dragons. I enjoy playing interactive games of various genres with friends and strangers as long as the competitive spirit is in good nature.

Sandra Mendoza Lee, LCSW-S
Counselor

  • Theoretical Orientation/Treatment Approach: My theoretical orientation is grounded in Client-Centered Therapy with a Strength-Based Perspective. I believe in the power of recovery and resiliency. Everyone is unique, and so is my approach to individual therapy. I draw from Narrative Therapy, Creative Therapies, Solution-Focused Therapy, Relational Psychotherapy, and Psychoeducation when creating treatment plans and providing therapeutic services. 
  • Areas of Interest: Anxiety, Depression, Trauma Recovery, Life Transitions, grief, and loss.
  • Fun Facts: I enjoy spending time outdoors, gardening, and camping. I listen to all music genres, but my favorite is alternative rock.

Jacqueline Valdes, LPC, LCDC, NCC
Clinical Case Manager

  • Theoretical Orientation/Treatment Approach: The foundation of my theoretical approach is mindfulness and motivational interviewing.  I also utilize psycho-education and strengths-focused techniques to increase a client’s level of knowledge, skill development, and overall self-awareness.
  • Areas of Interest: Substance use, trauma recovery, re-entry after incarceration, and severe mental health diagnoses (e.g., schizophrenia, personality disorders, etc).
  • Fun Facts: I'm an athlete and have an old soul. I enjoy competitive sports and play in a city league for soccer. I enjoy dancing, volleyball, 5K runs, and strength training. I also enjoy quiet evenings experimenting with different coffee/tea concoctions.

Iddo Hamer
Graduate Trainee

  • Preferred Pronouns: He/ Him 
  • Theoretical Orientation/Treatment Approach: I believe that the counselor acts as a guide to the client throughout their journey of change, asking questions, listening, and engaging with the client to help them get where they want to go. 
  • Areas of Interest: My main area of interest is trauma clients.
  • Fun Facts: I was born in Israel but grew up here. I love video games, anime, manga, TV, and movies. I recently got into building model kits. I love dogs and do walks and house-sitting on the side.

Adrianna McNeal
Graduate Trainee

  • Preferred Pronouns: She/ Her / Hers 
  • Theoretical Orientation/Treatment Approach: My theoretical orientation stems from strengths-based, brief therapy models, such as narrative therapy, collaborative therapy, and solution-focused brief therapy. Through these theories, I strive to instill and highlight stories of hope and resilience in clients. We are all experts in our own experience, so clients hold just as much valuable insight into their therapeutic process. 
  • Areas of Interest: Family, Couples, and Groups; Domestic and Family Violence; Anxiety and Depression; Grief and Loss; Life Transitions
  • Fun Facts:  I am the youngest sibling of three girls. I adore spending time with my family, especially my 1- year old daughter. I am originally from Louisiana. I used to be able to solve a Rubik's Cube (use it or lose it!)

Kayana Garza 
Graduate Trainee

  • Preferred Pronouns: She/ Her 
  • Theoretical Orientation/Treatment Approach: I lean toward a cognitive behavior therapy approach when working with clients. I want to create a comfortable, judgment-free place where students can speak their minds. I also like to focus on the client's strengths and use that to help tailor the session to them individually. I find importance in my clients leaving sessions feeling empowered and hopeful. 
  • Areas of Interest: My main interest is transitional-age youth. I am willing to work with anything that comes with that—anxiety, depression, development, life transitions, etc. 
  • Fun Facts:  I love spending time with my friends and family. I enjoy capturing moments with my film camera. I love to sing even though I can't.
