Starting September 15th through October 15, the Heritage Committee celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month in line with the Library of Congress. National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates and recognizes the cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to American society and honors five of our Central American neighbors who celebrate their Independence days in September.

September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. 

Texas A&M University-San Antonio is recognized as A Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). An HSI is defined in federal law as an accredited, degree-granting, public or private nonprofit institution of higher education with 25% or more total undergraduate Hispanic or Latino full-time equivalent. Fewer than 600 institutes have met these criteria. We intern recognize and celebrate our students, faculty, staff, and Jaguar community who identify as Hispanic or Latino.
