Texas A&M-San Antonio students and staff volunteered their time and energy to beautify and readying the on-campus garden in preparation for the Spring. This service project was coordinated in recognition of the MLK Day National Day of Service and to follow Dr. King’s example of being community-minded and civically engaged.  The 16 volunteers comprised members from the campus Plant Club, Omega Delta Phi fraternity, the Mays Center, and President Dr.Teniente-Matson.

The volunteers were preparing the garden beds for the spring plantings by digging out roots and pulling weeds to clean up the garden beds, refilling the garden beds with dirt, and turning over the compost in our compost bins to maintain the compost mounds. The group also prepared the new addition to the garden, which are two ADA compliant standing garden beds, by adding dirt to ready them for plantings. These standing garden beds will be beneficial to those individuals in wheelchairs as well as those who may have trouble kneeling or bending over the lower garden beds for long periods.

A&M-SA students, staff, and faculty are invited to carry out Dr. King’s legacy of service by serving others through volunteer work and becoming civically engaged citizens, as well as regular voters. The Mays Center offers on-campus volunteer opportunities weekly at the General’s Store, food pantry, and garden.

This is just one of many examples of service work our Jaguars have done. The on-campus catering company, Chartwells, hosted their food donation drive for the campus General Store food pantry. Chartwells received canned food items, cereal, and pasta through the entire month of November. Chartwells gathered 91.9 pounds of food donations equivalent to 76 meals through their efforts. Chartwells representative Elizabeth Smith also presented the General's Store food pantry manager, Dennis Endley, with 100 free meal vouchers to students throughout campus.

Students, staff, and faculty can also get involved with Make a Difference Mondays and can participate in external volunteer opportunities through our Service Saturday programs and join the Choose. Act. Impact. Day of Service events are a University tradition and occur every fall and spring semester.

The spring Choose. Act. Impact Day of Service is scheduled for Saturday, February 26th, from 8 am – 12 pm. and will take place at the Texas Diaper Bank, Winston Intermediate School of Excellence (W.I.S.E.), Morgan’s Wonderland, the San Antonio food bank warehouse, and our campus garden.
