The Mays Center for Experiential Learning and Community Engagement hosted Financial Literacy Week from October 4 through October 8, with the attendance of 174 students during seven events.

The week’s highlight was the inaugural Financial Resources and Educational Extravaganza (FREE), or financial literacy fair, which had tables with games and activities from 11 groups on and off-campus. These included RBFCU, the University Library, Student Counseling Center, Military Affairs, TXCPA, University Access, Financial Aid and Scholarships, Career Services, General’s Store, Internships, and the Financial Literacy Fellows. The main takeaways for students were to understand some of the many resources available to them on campus and learn something about personal finance.

Students were encouraged to fill out an “Investment Portfolio” to show what they learned from different resource tables and to share their thoughts on the event. If they filled it out, they received a complimentary “Get Lit with Financial Literacy” t-shirt. 93% of respondents said they learned about personal finance, while 96% said they made connections with people who helped them understand the available resources.

There was also a giant Jenga game, themed as “Balance Your Budget!” with each block labeled with a budget line item. Students competed against one another for oversized items: a waterproof blue-tooth speaker and a professional laptop backpack. Our winners Stephanie and Aisha, were drawn by raffle at the culmination of Financial Literacy week. We hope to have many more successful and fun financial literacy events such as this one. Join us next time!
