Graduation is right around the corner for Senior Miguel Castro, and he is taking every opportunity to impact the community.

In early September, Miguel received a call from his former supervisor, now the Policy Advisor for Mayor Ron Nirenberg. Per Mayor Nirenberg’s request, Castro was asked to fill a vacant committee member spot on the Disability Access Advisory Committee for the City of San Antonio.

The Disability Access Advisory Committee was formed to help create policies and procedures and provide accessible services and facilities for the citizens with disabilities of San Antonio.

Filled with inspiration, Miguel quickly applied and received confirmation of his acceptance into the Advisory Committee in early October. “This is a big opportunity for me, because eventually what I want to do once I graduate is be an advocate for people with special needs,” said Castro. While this opportunity came as a surprise, there is no doubt this aligns with Castro’s future endeavors. Castro said, “This helps me get my foot in the door,” with the vision of leaving his mark at a federal level.

Castro also serves as Board Chair for the Nonprofit Organization, San Antonio Independent Living Services, which helps individuals with special needs become more independent.

As the Disability Student Services Liaison for Student Government Association at A&M-SA, Castro is tenacious in ensuring that students with disabilities are getting their needs met.

The A&M-SA community and the Division of Student Affairs want to congratulate Miguel on this fantastic accomplishment and wish him well as he continues being an advocate for people with disabilities.
