Hispanic Heritage Month

Starting September 15th through October 15, the Heritage Committee celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month in line with the Library of Congress. National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates and recognizes the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans to American society and honors five of our Central American neighbors who celebrate their Independence days in September.
September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.
Texas A&M University-San Antonio is recognized as an A Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). An HSI is defined in federal law as an accredited, degree-granting, public or private nonprofit institution of higher education with 25% or more total undergraduate Hispanic or Latino full-time equivalent. Fewer than 600 institutes have met these criteria. We intern recognize and celebrate our students, faculty, staff, and Jaguar community identifying as Hispanic or Latino.
To celebrate this month, A&M-SA has many in-person and virtual events.

Dr. Mari Fuentes-Martin, Vice President of Student Affairs, a former chair on the Heritage Committee, said, “As a person who identifies as Latina, I feel that no matter what you identify as, you should be proud and accepted for that identity. Hispanic Heritage Month is something we (A&M-SA) should celebrate with the border Southside community. So many of us have the interwoven connection of being Hispanic, and National Heritage Months bring us together and educate others on cultures worldwide. We all have an origin of heritage, whether you be from the valley, like me, or from across the country, I encourage you to participate in the programming we have this month.”
