Storied high school coach joins collegiate ranks after stellar high school coaching career 

SAN ANTONIO – Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-San Antonio) announced today the hiring of Freddy Saguinetti as Head Coach of Women’s Soccer.  

Saguinetti comes to A&M-San Antonio after a long and storied career as a Texas high school soccer coach. Most recently he was the Head Coach for girls’ soccer at Cinco Ranch High School in Katy ISD.   

“We could not be more excited about bringing Coach Saguinetti on board,” said Darnell Smith Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports at A&M San Antonio. “In him, we are getting one of the most successful high school soccer coaches ever in Texas, whose knowledge of the game and phenomenal recruiting ties to Texas, and specifically San Antonio, are unsurpassed. 

“Most importantly, we are getting a proven leader who will develop student-athletes as champions in life. He is the cultural fit we were looking for to continue to grow our women’s soccer program.”  

Saguinetti began his coaching career in 1993 as the Head Coach for boys’ soccer at Edinburg High School with stops at Stratford High School (Spring Branch ISD), Elsik High School (Alief ISD), Morton Ranch High School (Katy ISD), and Cinco Ranch High School (Katy ISD). He has amassed a record of 353-46-53 as a boys coach and 232-27-30 as a girls coach, for an overall record of 585-73-83.  

Saguinetti has racked up 13 District Championships, 20 Bi-District Championships, 18 Area Championships, and six Regional Championships among both his boys and girls teams. He has coached teams to the semi-finals of the University Interscholastic League (UIL) soccer championship tournament six times, and is a five-time Region III Coach of the Year by the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches.  

“I am thrilled to join the Texas A&M-San Antonio family and establish a new foundation for the Lady Jags soccer program,” Saguinetti said. “My hope is to build something really special with these hard-working student-athletes that the university and the surrounding community will be proud to come out and support.”  

Saguinetti has a Bachelor’s of Arts in Education from the University of Texas- Pan American, (now University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley), and a Master’s of Science in Instructional Design and Technology from Full Sail University. He played soccer at UTPA, and he was inducted into the 2019 class of their Athletic Hall of Honor for his achievements on the soccer pitch.
