La Prensa honors A&M members
On Thursday, October 17, the La Prensa Foundation hosted its annual Leadership Awards Gala, which honors excellence in the community. The foundation commended Elaine Mendoza, member of the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, with the Entrepreneur Award, and Dr. Maria Hernandez Ferrier, TAMU-SA president, with the Education Award for her contribution to higher education. Dr. Ferrier joins university presidents in national conversation
The American Association of State Colleges and Universities' annual President-to-President conference held this year in Los Angeles included Texas A&M-San Antonio's president Dr. Maria Hernandez Ferrier as an attendee. The association gathers nearly 420 public colleges, universities and systems whose members share a learning-and-teaching-centered culture, a commitment to serve student populations and a dedication to research and innovate their regions.
A&M-San Antonio students devoted to preserving past
Texas A&M University-San Antonio established a new student chapter of the Texas Connection to the American Revolution Association. Under guidance of Dr. Amy Porter, assistant professor of history and TCARA board member, and Cassandra Castaneda, the chapter's student president, TCARA is now present at the University for those devoted to preserving and sharing history. The University's involvement is especially appropriate as the Main Campus sits on land that supported cattle that made a significant contribution to the success of the American Revolution.
Proposition 6 and the future of Texas water policy
On Wednesday, October 23, the University hosted a public forum on Proposition 6. The November 5 ballot issue proposes the state create a $2 billion revolving fund that can provide loans to water purveyors and local governments to help finance water projects. The University invited the community to engage with public officials regarding how Proposition 6 addresses Texas Water Policy. Speakers included State Sen. Carlos Uresti, former State Rep. and current San Antonio Water System CEO Robert Puente. Dr. Calvin Finch, director of the A&M System Water Conservation & Technology Center, moderated the discussion at the Educational & Cultural Arts Center.
