Institutional Biosafety Committee

Charge of IBC

The A&M-SA Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is charged with oversight for all activities using recombinant or synthetic nucleic acids (rDNA) and/or biohazardous materials as outlined in the NIH Guidelines. This includes teaching and research as provided in system guidance.

Responsibilities of the IBC:

1. Review and approval of the research and teaching activities involving r/DNA or other biohazardous materials.
2. Assess the containment levels, as required by the NIH Guidelines, for all experiments and teaching activities, including those involving whole plants and/or animals, cell cultures, tissues, human-derived materials, biological toxins, infectious agents, and regulated pathogens and pests.
3. The IBC reviews the safety of personnel and the environment by assessing the facilities, procedures and practices.
4. In order to ensure safe research, the IBC will mandate training and evaluate the expertise of personnel involved with rDNA and biohazardous research.
5. The IBC is responsible to assign appropriate containment levels for experiments.
6. Adopt and monitor emergency plans regarding accidental spills and personnel contamination in labs for protocols approved by the IBC.
